A Project Proposal for GIS

  1. Conduct a research on Water Drainage in the City of Garden Grove. Explore the natural pattern of drainage system that has been alternated by the city developments. Define the existent and non-existent courses of drainage based on 20, 50, and 100 years potential flood of the city and adjacent areas. How is the drainage flow will determine by the recreational areas, open spaces, infrastructures, and zonings.

  2. Sources of information will derive from the City of Garden Grove, planning, water, and utility departments, library, aerial photographs and mapping, and the internet.

  3. The method of producing a result for the city's hydrology pattern derives from layers of information including: the charts and data, graphic, and 3D map presentation.

The available sources that I had found are mainly from the manual books and papers. Some of the books are given as negative because they do not have validated information for my data research; however, they can be use as references in the future. On the other hand, the positive source books are available for my information. There are some charts, maps, and clearly define in the City of Garden Grove, which are useful. The sources are mostly prepared by the RB&F Company. I need more in depth of the Water Drainage System (WDS), for this is not a conclusion.

Besides the book sources, I found some but arduous sites on the internet. I am looking for the precipitation data of the county through the rain stations in several cities. Hopefully, I can start from the year 1980 to present records. Many positive sites, e.g., Ocregister, FEMA, Intellicast, and etc, are available for my theme research. My question is will these sources give the complete information? Since these are partial completed, I have to get more from else where.

Finally, I met some personnel in the City of Garden Grove through the Engineer, Planing, and Information System departments on Tuesday 8/23. The base map is huge (a 4 x 7 or more feet sheet) with the drainage direction on the properties of the entire City. It is not a conclusive information and an applicable to the GIS. I will work portion of the City. Especially, I would like to emphasize the west-central area of West and Twin lakes and the drainage system.
