Description
Design:
Comparison of Crimes Committed in neighborhoods with Neighborhood Watch programs versus neighborhoods that don't (Long Beach, CA.).
Sources:
Work-related/supported project (primarily from Mainframe
and PC-based data/databases).
Timing:
Outcome:
Maps comparing crime in neighborhoods with Neighborhood Watch
programs versus neighborhoods that don't.
Additional considerations:
What may be more relevant would be a comparison of crime in neighborhoods with mature/established Neighborhood Watch programs versus neighborhoods with newly implemented programs. Additionally, crime could be broken down into major categories (Part I/II or just a few classes such as Burglary, Robbery, Theft, Vandalism, etc.).
Changes:
The scope may be scaled down to just a part of the city instead of the entire city. The reason for this is that parts of the city (ex. Downtown), don't have Neighborhood Watch programs. Additionally, there are Apartment Watch and Business Watch programs. The project should be designed for maximum flexibility between these programs without major or duplicate database design. There is also concern on the end user side of "sharing" data with the mainframe system.
Date:
Currently have the database (Dbase) structure of the Neighborhood Watch program. There are shared fields within the Neighborhood Watch database and the mainframe download. Will need to further research the mainframe data further to come up with the fields necessary for the project.
Internet Log:
Source Log:
- Neighborhood Watch Database (Dbase)
- Mainframe download (delimited text file for crime stats)
