My friends and I listen to s*** loads
of music of all kinds, but the only thing we never talk about is this. It quite
simply excapes description. But, what the heck...
Every track a masterpiece, this presentation pulls the attentive listener
through Richard James' consicousness, revealing the expanse of his emotions.
Truely one of the few "electronic" albums which has the capacity to
toy with your soul, it exudes personality of all tones; from the delicate, fine
and gentle, through the cheeky, quircky and mundane, to the revelationary,
infinite strata of hyperspacial reality - this recording truely has as much
depth and content as the spectator could wish to find or even suppose. To put
it another way, this is as close as those who havn't discovered the potentials
of the inner landscape will currently ever get to experiencing the kind of
continually evolving subconscious patterns that stir within us all. Drukqs
exhibits a kind of artistry comparable to all the great masters that display a
coherant understanding of the transcendent; and the personality of this genius
displays a human originality of which will impact the art world as a strong
reference for years to come.
Hey
Mr. James, How 'bout a buy-back?, March 10, 2002

After reading all the glowing magazine and online reviews of this album, I
finally broke down and shelled out the twenty-five bucks to experience the
sonic masterpiece I was promised. I have never been more dissapointed in an
album in my life. I can't for the life of me figure out what all the fuss is
about. This is an album of random noise that has no form or structure
whatsoever. My impression of the creative process involved in the making of
this tragedy is a bunch of children being allowed to play with sophisticated
recording equipment. I would love to be more technical and give a song by song
critique but I can't find one redeeming quality on this album that would
warrant a deeper look. It is pure noise without affecting the listener on any
level...

idm/electronica/dnb/ect... albums, and this is almost my #1 favorite. Without a
few of the filler tracks it would be #1. This is one of those albums everyone
should have, period.

There is some amazing stuff on drukqs (Meltphacc 6, vordhosbn, omgyja, taking
control) however I keep having to skip through tracks simply because they are
just unlistenable. I guess you gotta be in the right frame of mind for them,
but I have been taking care of myself a little better these days.

Songs for prepared piano (heartful john cage with satie) among the exquisite
madness and pure genius of the classical drum-and-bass-noisy-ambient-breaks of
this guy. I think it's the best among "Richard D James Album" and
"Select Ambient Works 2". If you gonna buy a record this year buy
this.

Positively boring plunking on a
stupid broken piano with very little of the ebb and flow one would expect from
Aphex Twin. Zero impact.
If you like +come to daddy+ or +i care because you do+, then do
NOT buy this album. You'll be bored to tears.
I'm thouroughly disappointed.

Okay, cheesy titles aside, Drukqs
have got to be one of the most off putting albums I've ever heard. I couldn't
touch anything remotely Aphex Twin for months thanks to this.... Luckily my
friend restored my faith in Richard James when he sent me some stuff from his
earlier Ambient Works. ....
Which is not to discredit James at all. On the contrary, Aphex
Twin laid the ground work for some of his latter contemperaries who would soon
follow and expand on some his ideas(Autechre, Squarepusher, Boards of Canada)
that he had laid out years ago. However, I think he realized that he could
practically do anything he wanted and people would still listen. Sadly, I think
that's what Drukqs comes down to, a man with too much artistic freedom.
Its real shame too. Richard James tries so many interesting things
that with some time and effort, this could have been the mindblowing double
album he wanted. In the end, I think he knew that he could squease out a
mediocre album and people would still buy it.

Not since the great classical
composers has anyone come close to truly capture the essence of music. Aphex
Twin creates a mindblowing sounscape that can only be decribed as modern day
genius. Regardless of your genre preference, this album will either change the
way you think about music, or capture that sound that you have been looking for
your entire life.

After reading some of the reviews I
bought this album along with three others by Aphex Twin, expecting to hear
beyond beautiful music. After listening to this album I was hesitant to open
the others, fearing that they might be just as bad. However, I decided to give
the "Come to Daddy" EP a try, but it confirmed my previous
assessment. Fortunately I was able to return all to the place of purchase.
Aside from a few decent tracks (Jynweythek Ylow, Avril 14th, Kesson Daslef, 54
Cymru Beats, and Taking Control), most of which are not long enough to be
called tracks except for the latter two, this album was sheer noise; from
scraping pencils along pipes to submarine type sounds. Most of the tracks are
short (1 to 2 minutes) and quite repetitive. In conclusion, we get next to nothing
that appeals hormoniously to the senses.

Richard D. James seems to love to
torment his listeners. He's proved this in one way by staying noncommitant to anything
based in reality. Track titles are irrelevant or indecipherable, and based on a
review I read in Vibe magazine, derive from James' personal experience. I think
he's a snob, all in all. There are no meter to his beats or logical progression
to most of Drukqs. They seem ungrounded in any reality, only lending themselves
to conjecture. I find myself repeatedly wondering, "what is this guy
doing?". Nine of 15 tracks on disc one are two minutes or under. Lazy,
considering this is a double CD with a fairly hefty pricetag. Half the tracks
on both sides are contrived piano pieces. How they relate to his other chaotic,
break beats is unknown (known only to Richard). Further, there is little
progression from his earlier records. His sound hasn't modernized; nor has it
taken at all from other innovators like Boards of Canada or other Warp rcds.
artists, for instance. Tracks nine and 13 from disc one, and (piano) track nine
on disc two are my only faves from Drukqs. Oh ya, doesn't that album title get
to you, too? Come on, just call it Drugs! What are drukqs?!

A month ago I hadnt ever heard
anything from aphex, though I knew of his existance, as I like electronic
music... well I bought this cd and in a two weeks time I have purchased all the
long duration cds plus the come to daddy ep. Why? because this is absolute
gold, pure diamond of cd. actually they are two cds, with 30 tracks travelling
from madness to quiet landscapes of piano, from chaos to love, from good to
better. its warm, beautiful...
my album of the year, no doubt. you will hear many hard critics on Drukqs, but
also lots of admiring ones... this is what happens to art masterpieces...
because this is art.

Drukqs is an album that is unique
because of its lack of structure, its lack of cohesion, its lack of memorable
music, its lack of listening to something that will stay in your head while you
drive to work, its lack of being a CD that you can play to death, its lack of
being something that gathers dust because you are sick of hearing it over and
over again. In other words, Drukqs remains a thoroughly unique sound because
when all is said and done the lifespan of this album is limitless and not bound
by the laws of the predictable repetitive demise that most albums have. So for
$20 go knock yourself out on something you can slap on and experience over and
over again like new. However therein also lays the problem. If you do not like
it, then it is a gigantic waste of your precious time. Like I said - Certainly
original but way too unconventional for most.
90% of you out there will not like it, period. 5% will like it
only to be in with the 5% who seem to like this stuff and yet never get it.
That 5% who get it can be mostly described as people who want to make music

i'm fairly tired of people jumping on
the RDJ bandwagon. his time has really passed, this is just a collection of
songs thrown together haphazardly in order to get through his warp contract.
some little piano ditties and a few noisy drill and bass tracks later this is
nothing new. the production itself seems thin and soulless. after the
windowlicker release, i somewhat expected an album like this. its boring, more
or less. the worst thing the man has ever released.

Rolling Stone gave this album 1 star
and basically said that it was horrible. That was all I needed to see to make
the decision to go buy this album. And wouldn't you know it...I love it.
Apparently, Rolling Stone has a problem with interesting music. While I'll
admit that some of the songs on this album aren't "easy" to listen to,
as far as I'm concerned that just makes them more interesting. I really don't
see what's so horrible about this album. Of course there are the crazy, weirdo
songs, but there are also the pretty piano and ambient songs too. So, once
again, I'd like to thank Rolling Stone for their complete ignorance of good
music.

I couldn't believe how bad this cd
was. For once I actually agree with what Rolling Stone said. It has become more
and more clear that electronic music is not evolving but reached a high point a
few years back and is getting down right kiddish now. Aphex Twin was a big
influence in the early days of this kind of music and now he is a big influence
in the death of it as well. This album is a joke and is a dis-service to his
fans and the electrnoic commmunity. This kind of music is like four on the
floor techno where it is the same thing, over, and over and over again. This is
another nail in the coffin of intelligent electronic music. There is nothing
intelligent about Richard on this album. The only thing he does now is complain
about having fans, maybe he would like to try and get a real job? Don't buy
this cd, pick up ANYTHING else on Amazon.

Tons of critics bashed RDJ for making
this album, claiming it is disorganized, just garbage from his harddrive, and
basically just not "his normal caliber of work." This is total (***).
I love this album, both cd's are overflowing with emotion and precision. Anyone
that criticizes the work of Richard D. James and sees it as being a negative
product either have no imagination or no idea what emotions can sound like(as
weird as that may sound). If this is garbage from his harddrive, then i pity
all the other muscicians who are working their butts off to produce their
"best songs", because these blow just about everything else of late
away. The acid-breaks and drill'n'bass songs are hardhitting, tight, precise,
and the slower more fragile works are just as beautiful as any of his earlier
ambient work, if not more so. A great cd, by any standards, buy it with an
open-mind and two empty spots in your cd rotation, and don't plan on replacing
them for a while.^_^

I know that an artist has every right to name his creations as he
so desires, but in my opinion track titles like 'hy a Scullyas lyf adhagrow',
'orban eq trx 4' and 'omgyjwa-switch 7' kind of gives the listener a written
idea of just what to expect music-wise. Nonsensical, synthetic and
unimaginative.
Anyway, tonnes of people will no doubt buy Drukqs and line his
pockets with enough cash to refurbish his bank vault, but I'm through giving
(...)any more support.
By all means buy Drukqs to settle your own curiosity, but don't
say that I didn't warn you.
